Local brands and local industrySasaki, Junichiro

Focusing on regional brands that have been attracting attention in recent years, we will consider the direction of regional industries and the management of local companies. Behind the regional brands is the pressure of international competition with a view to economic integration in East Asia.

In this class, we will position regional brands as a means of international competitiveness of regional industries and local companies, and aim for concrete policy proposals with reference to industry-academia collaboration in Nordic countries such as Denmark.

Regional Management StudySasaki, Junichiro

Since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the division of roles and cooperation of various actors such as local governments, companies, NPOs and universities have become important themes in regional management. For example, I investigated the behavior of companies in the Hachinohe area of Aomori Prefecture during the earthquake as a member of NPO Hirodai Research, and made academic conference reports and policy recommendations. Think about future regional management while focusing on the roles of companies that are different from the past.

Since the enactment of the Basic Law on Science and Technology (1995), Japan has significantly increased its investment in research and development with the aim of becoming a creative nation in science and technology. In the area of regional industrial promotion, various efforts have been made with “industry-academia collaboration” at the core, and in recent years, distinctive industrial promotion measures based on the unique resources and environment of the region have been developed. This lecture will discuss how to link the research results of universities and other research institutions to industrialization, explain advanced examples from overseas, and discuss the current situation, issues, and prospects in Japan. We will also have an opportunity to discuss industry-university collaboration in Aomori Prefecture.

In this class, we study some important aspects of a firm or its activities, such as M&A, spin-off, OEM or licensing production etc. We will approach the essence of firms and organizations referring (or sometimes constructing) economic theories.

In this class, we will overview much of the literature on accounting, and acquire specialized knowledge in order to write their thesis. And acquire presentation skills for conference presentations.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in social business. Social business is an entity that addresses large-scale social problems through business methods. In this course, students will gain an understanding of the basic topics of social business through a review of the major research on social business.

In the background of local communities and local industries, there are technologies that are rooted in the history and culture of the region. In addition, when a new industry arises, there are many cases where new science and technology exist and are matched to the region.

Incorporating the latest research results, we will consider the transformation of the regional economy in the midst of internationalization and the international competitiveness of regional industries from various angles. Specifically, we will deal with the issues of international division of labor in Asia such as Aomori Prefecture and China, and explore the possibility of improving the industrial structure from the perspective of the international competitiveness of regional industries.

We will develop exercises including surveys of regional companies operating in multiple countries, and emphasize understanding the current state of corporate activities. In this way, education and research will be conducted on the internationalization of regional industries.

We will conduct research on various domestic and international systems and case studies focusing on “industry-academia-government collaboration” to understand the issues and results.

The research subject is to reconsider Japan’s regional industry from the perspective of international division of labor, which is an international corporate network. As an example, we will grasp the overall picture of corporate activities, such as the relocation of labor-intensive industries from metropolitan areas to Aomori Prefecture and the recent relocation from Aomori Prefecture to Asian countries such as China.
